OPERA BIO

Jacqueline Marx, mezzo soprano is a uniquely gifted and versatile performer whose outstanding voice and persona always make a memorable, indelible impression.  Miss Marx’s fascinating career spans the gamut between the sacred and secular worlds of music.  Besides serving synagogues full-time throughout portions of her career, she has made significant opera, musical theater and concert stage appearances internationally and throughout the U.S.

Favored roles include Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutte, both the Witch and Mother in Hansel and Gretel, Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus, Baba in Menotti’s The Medium, and both Dame Quickly in Verdi’s Falstaff and Mistress Quickly in Vaughan William’s Sir John in Love with such companies as Ashlawn-Highland Summer Festival, Amato Opera, Connecticut Operetta, Quisisana Opera/Maine, Brevard Music Festival, M.I.T. Opera Theater and University of New Mexico Opera Theatre.  Musical Theater appearances of note include Reno Sweeney in Cole Porter’s Anything Goes, Bloody Mary in South Pacific and Aunt Eller in Oklahoma. Miss Marx has also enjoyed forays into such coveted operetta roles as Katisha in The Mikado and Clotilde in The New Moon.

As Cantor Marx, the mezzo soprano’s pulpit singing has been extensive and widely sought after for the Jewish High Holidays.  Her teaching experience ranges from classroom music in synagogue religious schools to private voice lessons to Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutorials to conducting children’s, teens and adult choirs.

Jacqueline Marx was ordained Cantor at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s School of Sacred Music in 1997, where she also earned a Master of Sacred Music degree. Jacqueline holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from the acclaimed Cincinnati College / Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music in Opera from the Boston Conservatory.
