OPERA BIO
Soprano Avery Boettcher is regarded for the lustrous, opulent texture of her voice and versatile, captivating nature as a performer. This fall and winter 2021-2022 found Ms. Boettcher at Palm Beach Opera, where she made her auspicious debut as Frasquita in Carmen and Belinda in Dido and Aeneas, while also covering the roles of Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore and Valencienne in The Merry Widow. Immediately upcoming throughout summer 2022, Ms. Boettcher will debut with the Santa Fe Opera in various roles including the study cover of Micaela in the company’s mainstage production of Carmen.
Summer 2021 saw Ms. Boettcher return (in person) to Opera Theatre St. Louis for its summer season to cover acclaimed soprano Patricia Racette as Elle in Francis Poulenc’s one-woman opera, La voix humaine, and to conclude the festival season performing the role of Violetta Valery in an excerpt from La Traviata in OTSL’s annual Center Stage Concert.
In 2020’s summer season, Ms. Boettcher was scheduled to join Opera Theatre of St. Louis as a Gerdine Young Artist to cover the title role in Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah as well as Lily in Tobias Picker’s new opera, Awakenings. She would also perform as Nedda and Valentine in scenes from I Pagliacci and Les Hugenots for OTSL’s annual Center Stage Concert. As COVID-19 regrettably forced OTSL to cancel their summer season, Ms. Boettcher was fortunate to join other Gerdine Young Artists in a virtual program presented by OTSL. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Boettcher was invited to New Hampshire to join Opera North’s Resident Artist Program, where she debuted the role of Pamina in the company’s outdoor, socially-distanced production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.
Throughout the 2019-2020 season, Ms. Boettcher joined Michigan Opera Theatre as the company’s Resident Soprano. In fall 2019, she opened the season as Zerlina in MOT’s mainstage production of Don Giovanni, a performance which Opera News commended Ms. Boettcher as “sweet, bubbly, and a joy to watch.” In spring 2020, she performed the role of Lauretta in both Gianni Schicchi and Michael Ching’s Buoso’s Ghost and was praised by Encore Michigan for possessing “a genuine sweetness and perfect tone” while delivering the character’s iconic aria, “O mio babbino caro”.
Of further note, Ms. Boettcher recently spent two valuable summers with the Aspen Music Festival. While there, she performed John Harbison’s Mirabai Songs and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with the Aspen Conductors Orchestra and also she performed as featured soloist in the annual AMFS Benefit Gala. On the opera stage, she debuted the role of Contessa Rosina in Le Nozze di Figaro under the baton of world-renowned conductor and musicologist Jane Glover and also presented excerpts from Rigoletto, Così fan tutte, La Traviata, and L’Elisir d’Amore in the Aspen Opera Center’s series of Opera Scenes Concerts. She further had the privilege of performing the title role in an excerpt from Massenet’s Manon in an orchestral masterclass concert led by world-famous soprano Renee Fleming and acclaimed conductor Patrick Summers, as well as an aria from Così fan tutte in Renee Fleming’s individual masterclass concert.
On the concert stage, Ms. Boettcher has performed an array of works with orchestras around the world. She has performed contemporary pieces including Fredrik Sixten’s Requiem and Tarik O’Regan’s Triptych with the Milwaukee Bel Canto Chorus, the aforementioned Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, a semi-staged concert production of Die Zauberflöte with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra as Zweite Dame, Mozart’s Requiem with the Carmel Symphony, Handel’s Messiah with the Cairo Festival Orchestra in Egypt and a selection of popular opera arias and ensemble scenes in a concert with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Awards and scholarships received by Ms. Boettcher include Artistic Excellence Fellowship, the Mavis McRae Crow Scholarship, and the Wilfred C. Bain Scholarship from Indiana University, the Helen & Lynton Caldwell Memorial Award and the First Place Prize Career Grant from the National Society of Arts and Letters in their vocal competition. She also earned third place prize as a Regional Winner in the Central Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and third place prize in the Emerging Professional Division of the International Classical Singer Competition. In 2021, Ms. Boettcher was selected as a semi-finalist in the Lotte Lenya Competition, a finalist in the Partners for the Arts Competition, a finalist in the Music International Grand Prix Competition and First Place Grand Prize winner in the MIOpera Vocal Competiton.
Hailing from Appleton, Wisconsin, Avery Boettcher’s journey as an opera singer began at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where she earned her Bachelor of Music Degree in Voice Performance. Continuing her studies at Indiana University’s prestigious Jacobs School of Music where she pursued her Masters Degree in Voice Performance, Ms. Boettcher studied with world-renowned soprano Carol Vaness. In I.U. Opera Theatre’s mainstage productions, she debuted the roles of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore, while also honing Juliette in Roméo et Juliette, Marguerite in Faust, Giulietta in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, and Magda in La Rondine.
